About Katsushika Hokusai

Katsushika Hokusai (c. October 31, 1760 – May 10, 1849), commonly known as Hokusai, was a celebrated Japanese ukiyo-e artist, painter, and printmaker of the Edo period. His woodblock print series, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, includes the iconic The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Hokusai played a crucial role in evolving ukiyo-e from a style primarily focused on portraits of courtesans and actors to a much broader artistic scope encompassing landscapes, plants, and animals. His work profoundly influenced Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet amidst the wave of Japonism that swept across Europe in the late 19th century.

Responding to the booming domestic travel trend and his personal fascination with Mount Fuji, Hokusai created the monumental Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. This series, particularly The Great Wave off Kanagawa and Fine Wind, Clear Morning (Red Fuji), solidified his fame both domestically and internationally.

While best known for his woodblock ukiyo-e prints, Hokusai also produced works in various mediums, including paintings and book illustrations. He began his creative endeavors in childhood and continued refining his style until his death at 88. Over his long and illustrious career, Hokusai produced more than 30,000 paintings, sketches, woodblock prints, and illustrated books. With his innovative compositions and exceptional drawing skills, Hokusai is considered one of the greatest masters in art history.
